Joshua S. Siegel is the Managing Principal of StoneCastle, which he co-founded in 2003 and has grown to over $3 billion of assets under management. He is widely considered an expert in the community banking industry, is regularly featured at industry conferences and in print, online and broadcast media, and has been invited to help better educate government regulators in several engagements.
Prior to co-founding StoneCastle, Mr. Siegel was a Vice President the Global Portfolio Solutions Group within the Fixed Income Division at Salomon Brothers/Citigroup Global Markets, a group organized to finance portfolios of financial assets for corporations and to invest in the sector as a principal. He was one of three founding members of this group, which grew to over 50 professionals by the time of his departure. As the group continued to grow, Mr. Siegel was primarily responsible for new products, including pooled investment strategies for the community banking sector. Specifically, his authorship of Historical Default Rates of FDIC-Insured Commercial Banks, 1934–2001, Regional Bank Diversification, and Analysis of Idealized Cumulative Default Rates Beyond 10 Years established the basis for the Bank Bond market with both investors and rating agencies.
Mr. Siegel originally joined Salomon Brothers/Citigroup in 1996 in the tax and lease division, which provided structured financing to government-sponsored enterprises and Fortune 500 corporations. Prior to that, he was with Sumitomo Bank, where he served in three capacities: corporate lending officer to large corporate borrowers (United Technologies, Raytheon, Harvard Endowment), structurer of lease transactions for industrial and financial customers, and member of the New York credit committee. Mr. Siegel began his career in private equity and merchant banking, working for Charterhouse Bank in New York and London beginning in 1994, and Sulzer Brothers in Switzerland beginning in 1992. He holds a B.S. in Management and Accounting from Tulane University.
Matthew Mayers is a Principal at StoneCastle Partners. Prior to co-founding StoneCastle Partners, Mr. Mayers was a Director in the New Products Group within the Fixed Income Division at Salomon Brothers/Citigroup Global Markets Inc. and was the head of the legal group that worked alongside Mr. Siegel to develop, market, and execute new financial securities, including securities collateralized by community bank regulatory capital. Mr. Mayers was part of the team that executed the first pooled trust preferred securities transaction in early 2000. Prior to joining Citigroup in 1997, Mr. Mayers spent five years as a securities attorney at the law firm of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan. Mr. Mayers has a B.A. degree from Amherst College and a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School.
George Shilowitz is a Principal at StoneCastle Partners. Prior to joining StoneCastle Partners, Mr. Shilowitz was the President of Shinsei Capital (USA) Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shinsei Bank, Limited. Mr. Shilowitz joined Shinsei in 2000 to assist a J.C. Flowers and Ripplewood led reorganization of the bank and oversaw various businesses including Merchant Banking and Principal Finance. Prior to joining Shinsei, Mr. Shilowitz was a Senior Vice President at Lehman Brothers in the Principal Transactions Group, focusing on proprietary investments in distressed financial institutions and debt portfolio acquisitions. Mr. Shilowitz was a member of Salomon Brothers’ asset finance group and held various positions in mortgage arbitrage and financial engineering at the First Boston Corporation. Mr. Shilowitz holds a B.S. in economics from Cornell University.
